Women in Sports

Sports and athletics have always been a male domain and female athletes have always struggled to be taken seriously. Women are perceived as frail and delicate beings and they are not supposed to participate in activities that involve any kind of physicality. The traditional female roles require that women be limited to their homes and kitchens and their main interests be limited to looking sexy and getting married.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Women in Sports specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Bend it Like Beckham explores the problems faced by two women who want to pursue their passion in soccer but are conflicted by the traditionally expected role of women in society. Jesminder â€Å"Jess† Bhamara played by Parminder Nagra and Juliette â€Å"Jules† Paxton played by Keira Knightley are the two soccer crazy women who each face and overcome family and social pressures as they pursue their passion. T he biggest obstacle for women wanting to pursue a sporting career is that they are expected to be feminine while athletic women are considered to be masculine and hence sports are not considered an ideal career choice for women. The societal expectations from women make it difficult for them to pursue a career in sports and when they do go against the tradition to pursue their sporting dreams they are either not taken seriously or seen as less feminine than the more traditional women. Jess’ and Jules’ parents consider their interest in soccer to be a temporary phase and expect them to outgrow their â€Å"childish† pursuits and eventually get married and settle into domesticity. Both Jess and Jules are expected to spend more time on their grooming so that they may be able to attract men and eventually get married. Jules’ mother is horrified that her daughter does not dress in a more feminine manner and does not date any boys. On the other hand, Jessâ€℠¢ parents want her to learn cooking so that she can become a good wife. Both sets of parents are concerned that their grown up daughters may not be feminine enough to get a good husband. Irrespective of their cultural background, marriage is the ultimate destiny for women. When women dare to deviate from this path they are looked at suspiciously. And when they want to pursue a career that is predominantly male, they must be reprimanded and made to mend their ways. Sports, especially rough sports like soccer, that require athletes to sweat and bleed and can cause injuries that may render them unsuitable to carry out their marital duties are definitely off-limits for women.Advertising Looking for essay on gender studies? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Some of these apprehensions against women playing sports may stem from a misguided myth that rough sports may injure a woman’s reproductive health (Daniels 335). The myth c ould explain, in part, why younger girls are still tolerated if they indulge in active sports, but as they grow older, they are expected to become more serious about life. For women, this invariably means getting married and settling down. Jess’ mother berates her that she is too old to be playing around with boys. Obviously, while it was alright for her to play soccer as a child, as a young women, indulging in a masculine past time makes her less feminine and hence less likely to find a suitable husband. Similarly, Jules’ mother is distraught that Jules is not interested in shopping, an acceptable past time for women. When women do not outgrow their passion for sports and insist on becoming a professional athlete, they have to overcome a mountain of opposition, which may start right at home. Another reason why Jess and Jules face stiff opposition when they decide to pursue a sporting career is because women are supposed to have a different set of priorities than men. A sporting career is time consuming and involves travel hours of practice. Such a time consuming career can be difficult to manage for anyone and can be a cause for stress. But for a woman, it can be even more stressful since they are expected to help out at home a lot more than men are. Jess laments that a boy never has to stay back to help out with housework. Because a women’s ultimate role in society is to get married and have children, she cannot be expected to be pursue a time consuming career option. These different life priorities for man and women mean that while it is alright for men to be away from home for long periods of time, women cannot leave home without seriously jeopardizing their domestic life. Hence, a young girl must concentrate on learning skills that would be helpful to her as a married woman while a young boy must get skills that would help him earn a living. These traditional gender roles may seem inappropriate in the modern world where women demand e quality in everything. However, even today, few women are able to truly pursue a career without worrying about their family obligations. Under the circumstance, a woman wanting to pursue a sporting career, which is inherently time consuming can cause great conflicts between the traditionally expected female roles and their careers. Jules and Jess are perceived as too masculine which could be because women attempting to make their mark in a rough sport like soccer may intentionally try to subdue their femininity so that they may be taken seriously. This means that they try to take an aggressive stance like men might do when challenged, instead of trying to handle problems in a more civilized manner.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Women in Sports specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Sports and aggression go hand in hand and many famous sports personality often have hot tempers. Such an aggression is never acceptable, whether in boys or girls. But as women try to imitate men, they may take on this aggression, not only to seem more masculine but also to protect themselves in a male dominated environment. Since men are expected to be aggressive, when women become aggressive, they tend to become more acceptable in the men’s world. So when Jess is abused by a racial slur, she becomes physically violent with the abuser. Her violent reaction is not only on being abused but a direct result of playing a masculine sport wherein she has to constantly fight and prove herself. Her aggression is a the result of her frustration with a system that does not give her the same rights as men. While there is no reason why women cannot play rough and aggressive games like soccer, women should guard against imitating male aggression in order to become more acceptable in a male-dominated sport. Jules and Jess are mistaken for homosexuals indicating that when women participate in aggressive and rough traditional ly male sports like soccer they can lose their femininity leading to an identity crisis. Jules has no interest in wearing sexy, feminine clothes or in shopping and her mother misinterprets this to mean that Jules and Jess are lesbian. While the movie gives a humorous touch to this mistake, Daniels points out that â€Å"the athlete epitomizes masculinity†¦ (so) the female athlete must be masculine† (346). In other words, if a woman wants to engage in an activity that is by definition masculine, than she must want to be man and hence women athletes must be lesbians (Daniels 346). Under the circumstance, Jules’ mother’s error in thinking that Jules and Jess are lesbians may be a direct result of a social phenomenon that accepts female athletes only if they, in some way, do not conform to the acceptable social norm, in this case that of heterosexuality. Jules’ mother even blames soccer for her daughter’s homosexuality suggesting that if Jules had not participated in such a masculine sport she may be more feminine and heterosexual. In other words, since aggressive sports is associated with masculinity, participating in such a sport is supposed to make a person so masculine and hence homosexual. This over-simplification of homosexuality is because humans have a need to put everything in neat boxes and when something or someone does not fit, they must be labeled in a way so that society can reconcile them with the known labels.Advertising Looking for essay on gender studies? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More In conclusion, when women want to pursue a career in sports, they always face stiff opposition in a society that equates sports with masculinity and hence does not find a place for woman in the tight sporting circles. This opposition to female athletes starts right at home where parents and relatives often discourage young girls for pursuing a sporting career as it would mean being perceived as masculine and even a lesbian. A woman’s acceptable role in society is that of a wife and a mother and when a woman deviates from these traditional roles, she faces an uphill task in proving herself. As such, a female athlete has to fight much more than a male athlete as she not only has to fight for her place in the team but also fight for her right to be an athlete. Diabetes Mallitus essays

Diabetes Mallitus essays Diabetes mellitus is one of the most serious health problems facing the Native American Indians today. The disease is very common in many tribes cross the United States. "Diabetes plagues our Navajo people and will continue to be an epidemic disease until each of us takes action". Diabetes mellitus is a disease that occurs when the body is not able to use sugar. The body needs sugar for growth and energy for daily activities. It gets sugar when it changes food into glucose (a form of sugar). A hormone called insulin is needed for the glucose to be taken up and used by the body for energy. In a non-diabetic person insulin is secreted in response to increases in blood glucose levels. When the blood glucose increases, insulin is producing lower blood glucose. So the body keeps the blood glucose at normal levels. Many people with diabetes do not produce enough insulin and must take it by injection. Because insulin is a protein it would be digested if taken orally. When a person is diagnosed with diabetes, which means the body cannot make use of the glucose in the blood for energy because either the pancreas is not able to make enough insulin or the insulin that is available is not effective. The beta cells in areas of the pancreas usually make insulin. There are three main types of diabetes mellitus: insulin-dependent (Type 1), noninsulin-dependent (Type 2), and gestational diabetes (occurs during pregnancy). In insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM), the pancreas makes little or no insulin because the insulin-producing beta cells have been destroyed. This type appears most commonly in younger people under the age of 30. Treatment consists of daily insulin injections or use of an insulin pump, a planned diet and regular exercise, and daily self-monitoring of blood glucose. Type1 diabetes is relatively rare in Native American Indians. Many cases of Type1 diabetes are seen in people who have both American Indian and Caucasian heritag...

English Law Equity and Trust Coursework - Essay Example tion behind the creation of trust is that the devisee or grantee shall convey it, or dispose of the profits, at the will, or for the benefit, of another; an estate held for the use of another; a confidence respecting property reposed in one person, who is termed the trustee, for the benefit of another, who is called the cestui que trust. Generally the beneficiary gets interest and dividends on the trust assets for a set number of years. Law of equity and trust confers the provision regarding the trust. It laid down several duties and responsibilities for the trustees. Trust can be raised from either trust deed/covenant as said before or by the Will, i.e. a testamentary trust is a trust created by a Will or a codicil to a Will. A testament is a Will. Here the trust instrument is the Will/Codicil. A testamentary trust can not be by inter vivos i.e it can not be exist between living persons. Generally there can be two types of disputes raised from this type of the trust established by the law. a) Dispute concerning property left in Wills which are over the capacity of a testator b) dispute regarding whether the testator made the Will under undue influence. Here there is a rule that he/she must dispose of that property personally and may not delegate that power of disposition to another. Before we render the service of tackled conclusions to Tony and Nathan, it is inevitable to have a look upon the rules, provisions, scope of trustees of trust deed and trustees of testamentary trust. What Is Philosophy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

What Is Philosophy - Essay Example The actual meaning of the word 'philosophy', however, is such that neither interpretation can truly be said to be wrong. On the other hand, neither interpretation is truly correct on its own, either. This being the case, the question of what philosophy is should first be answered. The word 'philosophy' actually derives its origins from the Greek words 'philo' and 'sophos', which respectively mean 'love' and 'wisdom' - thus, the word can be translated as 'love of wisdom' (Online Etymology Dictionary, 2012). Philosophers tend to concern themselves with problems, especially those with concepts such as existence, knowledge and values (Teichmann and Evans, 1999). They then proceed to try and answer these questions as logically, rationally and systematically as possible. One of the more notable things said of the field of philosophy is that it revolves around the creation of concepts. This is actually a rather accurate description; for instance, the subcategory of metaphysics concerns itse lf with explaining the nature not only of the world, but of the human existence (Geisler, 1999). Those who specialize in this branch of philosophy search for knowledge with the aim of helping others attain greater understanding of the world, as defined by its fundamental notions such as existence, causality, ontology and possibility. ... This is not necessarily a bad thing, though - as the legendary Bruce Lee once put it, all knowledge ultimately leads to self-knowledge (Little, 1996). Interpreting any given subject will inevitably require the use of one's logic - of one's rational capabilities to try and make sense of the subject at hand. And as Popkin and Stroll (1993) explain, this in turn requires that one is capable of reasoning things out in a valid manner, based on the body of knowledge involved. For instance, one need not be a lawyer or a law student to know the law. However, the only way to truly understand the intricacies of the law is to unlearn everything one has been taught to think of it, and to try and understand the law as lawyers do. Joe Hyams (1982) quotes no less than Bruce Lee himself when he emphasizes the need to let go of one's preconceived expectations and notions. For one to properly study a subject requires that he be willing to let go of everything he has been taught to think about that sub ject, and to approach it with a clean slate, as if for the first time. In connection with this, it has often been said that lawyers are not truly after the truth, but what can be proven. As most lawyers and law students know, this can and often is a problem. For one thing, evidence can, in fact, be fabricated, and besides that, even the evidence at hand can be misinterpreted such that it heavily favors a particular interpretation of events. This can be very frustrating, especially to those who took to heart the lawyer's oath to uphold justice and truth seriously Furthermore, evidence can be admitted or dismissed depending on the methods used to obtain it,

The Many Infectous Diseases Caused by Streptococcus Pyogenes Essay

Streptococcus Pyogenes: Multi-Purpose Monsters Streptococcus pyogenes is a type of group A streptococci that causes many infectious diseases. This bacteria is commonly found in a variety of organisms, but is usually harmless unless the organisms defenses are compromised. When detrimental, group A streptococci cause infections such as impetigo, ecthyma, scarlet fever, and necrotizing fasciitis. Each of these infections displays different symptoms and requires different treatment. These treatments are primarily by antibiotics, because antibiotics are still the chief cure for GAS bacterial infections. One of the most interesting, rare, and fatal infections caused by streptococcus pyogenes is necrotizing fasciitis, and though it can cause some severe symptoms, a simple dose of antibiotics can prevent or even cure this dangerous infection. Streptococci are a large, diverse group of bacteria that are gram-positive cocci (Sharma). Streptococcus Pyogenes, a group A Streptococcus, is a universal organism that can cause many different diseases in humans (Sharma). Group A Streptococci are commonly referred to as GAS and they are commonly identified on blood agar plates as white or gray colonies (Sharma). They commonly appear in pairs or short chains that are non-motile and non-spore-forming (Sharma). Additionally, they have a fermentative metabolism, and are facultative anaerobes that require blood to grow (Todar). For this reason, GAS bacteria are often found in mammals. It is estimated that 15%-20% of all healthy individuals harbor this pathogen in their bodies, specifically their respiratory tract—without signs of disease (Todar). However, it is believed that the bacteria can cause harm if the organism’s defenses are compromised or th... ...July 2008 . DeLeo, Frank R., and Michael Otto. Causes Of Myasthenia Gravis Health And Social Care Essay

Myasthenia Gravis is an autoimmune upset, the immune system attacks portion of the organic structure. In MG that portion is the muscular system. The organic structure produces antibodies that mark receptors for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine on the musculus cells at neuromuscular junctions. Peoples with MG have a one -third the normal figure of acetylcholine receptors here. On a whole -body degree, this causes weak and easy fatigued musculuss. MG affects 100s of 1000s of people worldwide. Mostly adult females in their mid-twentiess or mid-thirtiess, and work forces in their 1960ss and 1970ss. The particular symptoms depend upon the site of onslaught. For 85 % of patients, the disease causes generalised musculus failing. Many people develop a characteristic level smiling and rhinal voice and have trouble mastication and get downing due to affected facial and neck musculuss. Many have limb failing. About 15 % of patients experience the unwellness merely in the musculuss environing their eyes. The disease reaches crisis degree when respiratory musculuss are affected, necessitating a ventilator to back up external respiration. MG does non impact esthesis or physiological reactions ( Shier, 2010 ) . Causes of Myasthenia Gravis The exact cause of MG is non known. One theory is the status may be triggered by a virus or other infection that has a similar construction to a portion of the acetylcholine receptor. Sometimes adult females with MG who give birth transmit these peculiar antibodies to their babes, doing musculus failing in the baby. This is called neonatal myasthenia and occurs in approximately 12 % of babes whose female parent has MG. â€Å" It is different from inborn myasthenia because the infant gets better in a few hebdomads as the antibody blood degrees go down † ( MediResource, 2013 ) . The other abnormalcy that frequently shows up in people with myasthenia gravis is an hyperactive, overlarge, or otherwise nonfunctional Thymus. The Thymus is a secretory organ located where the cervix joins the thorax. It is of import for the normal development of the immune system. Normally, the Thymus is larger in childhood than in maturity and becomes inactive around pubescence. In people with MG, nevertheless, it frequently keeps traveling into maturity ( MediResource, 2013 ) . Some people with MG turn out to hold a thymoma ( a tumour in the Thymus ) . This is a type of malignant neoplastic disease, but really few people die of thymomas ( MediResource, 2013 ) . The most common symptoms of MG are the dual vision which is called diplopia, every bit good as saging palpebras which is called ptosis, and musculus failing that normally gets worse after exercising or at the terminal of the twenty-four hours and improves with remainder. ` Swallowing troubles are of peculiar concern as they can be unsafe. MG typically does good at the beginning of a repast but tyre at the terminal, do get downing excessively hard. Some deteriorate to name where there is entire loss of ability to masticate and get down. At this point, nutrient may lodge in the pharynx, or nutrient and drink may get down to travel the incorrect manner, for illustration into the trachea, doing coughing and choking. Foods which may trip MG symptoms may be: Very hot, Spicy, Dry and britty Foods which require a batch of masticating attempt, such as tough meats or chewy Sweets, could besides pall out the myasthenic and cause trouble in get downing ( Boyce, 2013 ) . Many people with MG upset find it temporarily impossible to eat may hold to be admitted to a infirmary and be fed intravenously. Of more immediate danger is when the disease causes trouble in breathingaˆÂ ¦This is called a myasthenic crisis, and it ‘s responsible for most of the little figure of deceases due to myasthenia gravis. Peoples with take a breathing jobs must travel to a infirmary instantly. ( Boyce, 2013 ) How is Myasthenia Gravis treated? Today, MG can be controlled. There are several therapies available to assist cut down and better musculus failing. Medicines used to handle the upset include anticholinesterase agents such as Prostigmin and pyridostigmine, which help better neuromuscular transmittal and increase musculus strength. Immunosuppressive drugs such as Orasone, cyclosporine, and Imuran may besides be used. These medicines improve musculus strength by stamp downing the production of unnatural antibodies. They must be used with careful medical followup because they may do major side effects ( Nursing Link, 2013 ) . What is the forecast? With intervention, the mentality for most patients with MG is bright: they will hold important betterment of their musculus failing and they can anticipate to take normal or about normal lives. Some instances of MG may travel into remittal temporarily and muscle failing may vanish wholly so that medicines can be discontinued. Stable, durable complete remittals are the end of thymectomy. In a few instances, the terrible failing of MG may do a crisis which requires immediate exigency medical attention ( Nursing Link, 2013 ) . How is Myasthenia Gravis Diagnosed? The first stairss of naming MG include a reappraisal of the person ‘s medical history, and physical and neurological scrutinies. The marks a doctor must look for are impairment of oculus motions or musculus failing without any alterations in the person ‘s ability to experience things. If the physician suspects MG, several trials are available to corroborate the diagnosing. A particular blood trial can observe the presence of immune molecules or acetylcholine receptor antibodies. Most patients with MG have abnormally elevated degrees of these antibodies. However, antibodies may non be detected in patients with lone optic signifiers of the disease ( Nursing Link, 2013 ) . Another trial is called the edrophonium trial. This attack requires the endovenous disposal of edrophonium chloride or tensionA ® , a drug that blocks the debasement ( breakdown ) of acetylcholine and temporarily increases the degrees of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. In people with MG affecting the oculus musculuss, edrophonium chloride will briefly alleviate failing. Other methods to corroborate the diagnosing include a version of nervus conductivity survey which trials for specific musculus â€Å" weariness † by insistent nervus stimulation. This trial records weakening musculus responses when the nervousnesss are repetitively stimulated. Insistent stimulation of a nervus during a nervus conductivity survey may show decreases of the musculus action potency due to impaired nerve-to-muscle transmittal ( Nursing Link, 2013 ) . The Future The hereafter of Myasthenia Gravis lies in the elucidation of the molecular immunology of the anti-acetylcholine receptor response with the end of developing a rational intervention for the unwellness that will bring around the abnormalcy in the immune system that consequences in the AChR immune response. To this terminal, six wide classs of theoretical intervention schemes need to be explored. First, those interventions which target the antigen specific B-cells ; Second, those interventions which target the antigen specific CD4+ T-cells ; Third, those interventions which interfere with co-stimulatory response for antigen presentation, Fourth, interventions aimed at bring oning tolerance or anergy of the CD4+ T-cell to the car antigen or the CD4+ epitopes ; Fifth, those interventions designed to excite those immunological circuits which activate CD8+ cells specific for the activation antigens expressed by CD4+ cells and Sixth, those interventions which intervene with cytokine map and discourage autoimmune mediated inflammatory responses ( Howard, 2010 ) .
